CaBOL App Development Group’s Docs Field App Development CaBOL App Feedback Table – Beta ver.

# By Feedback Discussion Way forward
1 SO fields that I can’t change, I don’t really need to have displayed, e.g. the Unique ID. Decision needed if all UFI should stay hidden. Are there cases when users need to see (copy) the UFI?
2 SO fields, in which I always enter the same thing, can always show the last entry by default, otherwise it is endless typing, which nobody wants to do, e.g. collector name, country …
also at Locality per default vllt. enter the last used Locality, sometimes that changes between two collections only slightly … and again, every retyping should be saved
Implemented partially. Problem: “region”, due to existing condition (“show only if country is not “other”). Category “other” needed?
3 SO I like the pre-standardized formats for provinces and habitat types, this should be standardized outside of OpenForis in CaBOL, a free text field for selection would be good there, if one does not find the current habitat. Habitat types need to be discussed and agreed upon, as standardized categories would be great added value for CaBOL.
Adding text field (“other”) possible, but bears the risk that if used too often, only minimal value would be added.
To be discussed (Standardization of habitat types (levels, hierarchy, etc.)
Should a simplified “level0 Habitat” e.g. forest, not forest, wetland be implemented?
4 SO habitat level 2 is still missing … should this be the microhabitat?

Some “level1 habitats” do not have a “level2 habitat”. Enabling is pending (FAO), planned for next update
5 SO no one types Permit Number in the field, I would delete it completely at this point. Completely out or put in another place? Lab? If, then where should field “Permit Number” be implemented?
6 SO photo function I find cool and useful (but I have not tested) Question is still open: how many photos we need and how large they may be (currently 2 MB max)
7 SO ergonomically I would find it better if the forward button >> would be at the bottom of the screen edge, when typing so far I always cover the screen unsightly. Cannot be changed, I think
8 SO I could make an export and transfer it to my desktop, but nowhere useful to open it there, not in excel, editor or browser. What is there to do? Somehow we have to get our CaBOL Excel table displayed at the end, according to the instructions there is a .csv export function. But I can’t find it. You can install the Open Foris Collect Desktop App. Then you can export your data (incl. photos) from the smartphone (.collect-data or backup format), import it there, edit it again (“clean it up”) and then export it as Excel or CSV. The moment you import it into the Collect Desktop app, the data is created in a database. There they are also directly accessible (complicated). When you export from OF Collect Desktop, the table looks a bit different from the CaBOL Excel table. But a simple script could convert it to the CaBOL Excel spreadsheet (without problems). I am talking to Chris about automating the “restructuring of the spreadsheet”, also the question if the field data can not be loaded directly to the server, “rewritten” there and imported into the final CaBOl DB.

To provide a rough idea of the potential output, there is a folder in the Nextcloud that shows what the export would look like.

9 SO When backing up, the app told me that it was saved in the directory on the smartphone, but then there was no file. Try it via the export function. In the settings you can specify the destination folder, actually it should save the backup in the right place.
10 SO In principle, I find the app usable, but there are still too many fields to fill or too much (pointless) typing of repetitive information. In the field, the app should do per default “quick and dirty” no more than: UFID automatically assigned, option to specify own collection/field book number (column D of excel sheet), location information, taxon, GPS, photo … All other fields only optional afterwards, if desired. Colum D in CaBOL_Spreadshet_2020_final.xlsx reads “If sample is already deposited in a collection:” Voucher # in collection (Fill in only if specimen is in a museum)
should this be converted to a personalized ID field?
UFID location information, taxon, GPS, photo set to “always required” all other fields optional?
11 MA If sampling was done in the city how to note it in the list? The provided habitat list is only a suggestion.  I believe we need to extend it further and discuss how the habitats described for Armenia can be included. Please see the working doc habitat types in the group. Of course, always a “other” category can be included where the habitat can be described via free text. Habitat list needs to be extended/harmonized.
12 MA In the region list please insert true spelling of Yerevan (you have Erevan) Noted! I got the list somewhere and didn’t doublecheck. I will edit the list Change code list.
13 MA

If we have other habitat other than noted how to insert it? Many Armenian habitats are absent here. Have you book of G. Fayvush “Habitats of Armenia” ? If not I may send you this pdf.

Please see discussion on no. 11 above. Habitat list needs to be extended/harmonized.
14 MA I have stopped on Bar Code ID. Sorry, probably you say it many times but I did not fix from what I have taken supplied stickers? If you can test it on the stickers that you have, that would be great! I only tested two pictures (jpeg) with barcodes, available here.
15 MA How to export data that would be possible to open on the computer? Please see discussion on no. 8 above. Discuss with IT how data output can be made available.
16 LM Select habitat types for water ecosystems (freshwater, marine, lentic or lotic, lake river or maire or any classification something similar) Please see discussion on no. 11 above. Habitat list needs to be extended/harmonized.
17 MA It will be great if the scanner of code will be not obligate to fill. It will help in field collection, when using a phone we will on place insert the data. Usually it is most prone part, when you think that remember to fill it later and then forget sometimes forever:) Set Barcode to “not required”.
18 VA
  1. as I have said during the last meeting, it would be preferable for us to consider two main options for Habitat 1. a) terrestrial and b) aquatic
19 VA
  1. 2.  In Habitat 2 consequently we propose to add some categories for aquatic habitat like: a) river, b) lakes, ponds and reservoirs
20 VA
  1. 3. For the river option it would be preferable to provide additional (optional) options based on prevailing substrate types:
hygropetric sites,  water layer on solid substrates
􀂅 megalithal >40 cm, large cobbles, boulders and blocks, bedrock
􀂅 macrolithal >20 cm to 40 cm, coarse blocks, head-sized cobbles, with a variable percentages of cobble, gravel and sand
􀂅 mesolithal >6 cm to 20 cm, fist to hand-sized cobbles with a variable percentage of gravel and sand
􀂅 microlithal >2 cm to 6 cm, coarse gravel, (size of a pigeon egg to child’s fist) with variable percentages of medium to fine gravel
􀂅 akal >0.2 cm to 2 cm, fine to medium-sized gravel

While lakes, ponds and reservoirs could have the following options:
    littoral zone
    sublittoral zone
    profundal zone

21 VA 4. Also, we didn’t find Stoneflies (Plecoptera) in the list of Insects. So, we suggesting to add it

Discussion (1)

  1. Follow these 4 steps if you want to see your data as Excel table, 1) download, install and start OPEN FORIS COLLECT, 2) Export the data from your smartphone using the backup function (.collect-backup), 3) import the backup file in OPEN FORIS COLLECT under the Survey Designer Submenu 4) switch to Data Management, select the CaBOL survey and click on Export to CSV/Excel, after specifying the parameters hit Export. The tables will be exported as .zip file. Unzip and open the relevant tables in MS Excel or similar.
